1999 Who Is This Man – Day One
Monday, February 6, 2006 at 07:58AM Actually, I had known Mr. X for 8 years at this point but this was an incredibly defining moment in what I forever would know to be a real friendship. He is about ten years my senior but our families have been friends through it all – the good, the bad, the terrific and the ugly.
It was awkward sitting on the screened in porch. There were people all around – swimming, eating and hanging out on the deck – but for just a few moments we were alone. It was awkward because Mr. X was the head of the pastoral search committee and I the once youth, then singles, then associate pastor, had been requested by the congregation to be reviewed for the position. It was awkward because we were friends but really knew we shouldn’t discuss this outside of it all. It was awkward because once one sets a course like this it is hard to come back from it. It was awkward because if they decided I should not have this position, it would be hard to stay.
“You know, Doug. I don’t know…”
“X, we don’t have to talk about this.”
“I know. I just want you to know that I don’t know if you are supposed to be the pastor or not. God hasn’t told me – I am not sure. I want what He wants.”
“I do to.”
“I know.”
“I am fine.”
“I am good too.”
The screen door opened…
How could you find a better friend or leader to walk with than one who will always choose God over you?
